Prescription Requirements

Certain medications offered by PetMeds Direct are classified as prescription drugs and require a valid prescription issued by a licensed Canadian veterinarian. Before dispensing any prescription medication, our licensed pharmacists must receive and verify a valid prescription.

All prescriptions must include:

  • Pet owner's name and contact information
  • Pet's name and species
  • Medication name and strength
  • Dosage instructions
  • Quantity prescribed
  • Number of refills
  • Veterinarian's name, signature, and license number
  • Date of prescription

Prescriptions written outside Canada cannot be accepted under Canadian law.

Uploaded Prescription Requirements

If you choose to upload a photo or scanned copy of your prescription through our website, please note the following:

  • All uploaded prescriptions are subject to verification with the prescribing veterinarian before dispensing.
  • Our pharmacy team will contact the veterinarian directly to confirm authenticity and accuracy. Any unclear, incomplete, or altered photos will delay processing until verification is complete.
  • Uploading a prescription does not guarantee immediate approval or dispensing.

This process ensures compliance with the Ontario College of Pharmacists’ standards and maintains patient (pet) safety.

Prescription Validity

Prescriptions are valid for one year from the date issued by your veterinarian, unless otherwise specified. Controlled substances may have shorter validity periods as required by law.

Refills

If your prescription includes refills, we will contact your veterinarian to confirm authorization before processing. Please ensure you order refills in advance to avoid running out of medication.

Prescription Verification Process

Upon receiving a prescription (faxed, emailed, mailed, or uploaded), our pharmacists:

  •  Verify the veterinarian’s credentials and active license status.
  • Review the medication, dosage, and directions for appropriateness.
  • Contact the prescribing veterinarian for clarification if needed. Approve the prescription only once all verification steps are complete.
  • No prescription medication will be dispensed until the verification process is finalized.

Dispensing and Shipping

Once your prescription is verified:

  • Your order is reviewed by our pharmacy team.
  • Medications are dispensed by a licensed pharmacist.
  • Orders are checked for accuracy and packaged securely in tamper-evident, temperature-appropriate materials.
  • We dispense and ship prescription medications only within Canada. We do not ship prescription medications internationally.
  • Depending on shipping requirements (i.e. cold chain, bubble wrap), packages may be delayed to ensure appropriate travel conditions.
